In conceiving and bringing the Tokyo performance to life…

“Open your perception.”

“The one of spring.”

“Try to imagine.”

“The choreography means nothing…”

“If there’s no emotion, you have nothing…”

“Feel your face against the fresh green grass.”

“Feel the flowers of Buenos Aires.”

“Feel like porteñas.”

—That’s what I keep telling the women, with a deep desire for them to adopt, right now, our way of moving through the city, our expressions, our sensations, our way of being.

But I don’t want them to lose their identity. And luckily, that is impossible—at least in this tribe. Both men and women preserve their gestures: Japanese, Argentine, Latin American gestures.

When I boarded the plane in Buenos Aires, I carried the foolish idea of imposing on them what it means to “Feel Buenos Aires” the way I do—through an Argentine lens, recreating an era they weren’t even born in.

Of course, the first rehearsal presented me with a very different reality: genuine people, strong personalities, so beautiful…

Suddenly, my whole perspective shifted.

Between jet lag and the shock of the challenge, I confess the beginning wasn’t easy. The days go by, and the pressure builds. So does the emotion.

Words are often unnecessary. Or insufficient. Or simply not needed.

The contact of bodies, holding hands without resistance, looking into each other’s eyes. Resisting, expanding, compressing, playing with our backs, and finding the embrace.

That is where I feel the tango begins—the universal tango, our tango.

Argentine music. Argentine dance.

We are walking together toward the same meeting point.

On May 14 and 16, we will be there. Committed and all in.

And as always, it is you who will complete the artistic act.

To feel Buenos Aires is to return to the source—or rather, to realize you never left it.
